It’s time to upgrade Microsoft Azure Active Directory Connect. Unfortunately, we cannot connect to Azure AD with our Azure AD global administrator credentials in the upgrade setup wizard. When we start the Azure AD Connect installation and enter the Azure global administrator credentials to upgrade Azure AD Connect, we get the error Unable to validate credentials due to an unexpected error.

To fix Azure AD Connect unable to validate credentials due to an unexpected error, follow the below steps:

1. Start Command Prompt as administrator.

2. Change the directory to the Microsoft Azure Active Directory Connect folder.

cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Azure Active Directory Connect"

3. Run the AzureADConnect.exe /InteractiveAuth command.

4. The Upgrade Azure Active Directory Connect window appears. Click Upgrade.

5. Fill in the Azure AD global administrator account and click Next.

6. The modern authentication window appears. Fill in the password and click Sign in.

7. Click on Upgrade to upgrade Azure Active Directory synchronization.
