In Outlook we can not only change the language of the menu items and buttons but also the language for spelling and grammar. Having the menu items and buttons in your own language makes it easier to work with Outlook.

Also when you need to write your messages in a different language it’s convenient to have the grammar and spelling checked in the correct language.

In this article, I will explain how you can change the language in Outlook. Both Online and in the desktop app.

Change Outlook Language

First we are going to change the display language of Outlook to the language of your choice. This will change the language of the buttons and menu items in Outlook.

In the steps below I assume you currently have Outlook with English buttons and menu items. If it’s a different language then just follow the numbered steps in the screenshots.

  1. Open Outlook and click on File

2. Select Options (lower left corner)

  1. Select Language
  2. If you prefered language is listed, then select it
  3. Click on Set as Preferred to change the Outlook display language

Restart Outlook for the changes to take effect.

Install Office Language Pack

If the language isn’t listed then you will first need to install the correct Office Language Pack on your computer. The language pack contains the display text and proofing tools for your Office installation and can be installed after installing Office.

You can download the Office Language Pack here at Microsoft. After you have installed the pack, follow the steps below to activate it in Office:

  1. In Outlook, open the Outlook Options again ( File > Options > Language )
  2. Select your newly installed language
  3. Click on Set as Preferred

Outlook needs to restart for the change to take effect.

Change Outlook Spell Check Language

We can also change the Outlook spell check language in the same options screen. Outlook will, by default, use the system language for proofing (spelling and grammar check) the messages that you write.

To change it we will need to open the options screen once again. Follow the steps from the chapter above to open Outlook Options.

  1. In Outlook Options, click on Language
  2. Selec the language under “Office authoring languages and proofing”
  3. Click on Set as Preferred

If the language isn’t listed, then click on Add a Language and install the language that you want to use. You might need to install the correct Office Language Pack first as described here.

Change the language in Outlook Online

By default, Outlook Online will follow the language settings of your Ofice 365 account. But you can easily change the display language of Outlook Online through the Outlook settings.

  1. In Outlook Online, click on Settings
  2. Click on View all Outlook settings
  1. Select General on the left side
  2. Change the language
  3. Refresh the page to apply the settings

Wrapping Up

Make sure that you have installed the correct Office Language Pack before changing the language in Outlook. If you only need to change the proofing language temporarily then you can also change it in the new message screen, under the Review tab > Language.
